Our second inquiry unit, where we are in time and place. We have an approach to the importance of recognizing the diversity in social groups. The unit introduces children to a variety of topics surrounding multiculturalism and an appreciation for diversity. Children will explore what are some of the things that make them different and what are some of the things that they share.

The first activity Pre-first did, was a cultural inquiry about some countries in the world, their food, the traditions, animals, languages, and important topics. They had the opportunity to talk about their research and answer their classmates’ questions. We can compare and rescue the differences and similarities between each society and the one we live in.

The second activity, also helps to improve and maintain a healthy coexistence in the classroom, everyone recognizes the characteristics that they like (treasures) and the ones they don’t like about themselves. As they talk about their treasures they become aware that they share some of them with each other making them similar in despite of their differences. This treasures symbolically sweep away the characteristics they don’t like.

Through this unit the students will recognize themselves and others as unique individuals, will develop an understanding of diversity, also they will build an appreciation for their similarities and differences and how this enrich the society they live in.
